Unlike many balloon views of American cities taken from open fields or rooftops, this one looks down on the working edge of San Francisco, where piers, wharves, and moored ships crowd the bay. The waterfront was the city's commercial heart in the period when balloon photography was new, handling cargo, passengers, and ferries that linked the city to the East Bay and beyond. Photographers aloft had to contend with wind, unsteady platforms, and slow exposures, so these views are valued both for the way they map a dense port and for the rare vantage they offer on how the shoreline was laid out.
