Few things set this view apart like its wide sweep: the camera takes in an entire city and the water beside it in one frame, as if seen from a balloon's basket. Photographs like this date from the years before airplanes, when a balloon was the only way to get a camera high enough for a panorama. Early aerial photographers had to contend with long exposures, unsteady baskets, and chemical plates that were slow and fragile. Pictures like this one gave viewers a map-like understanding of how a harbor city was laid out, its streets and shoreline visible at a glance.
