Few views from 1909 show a seaside resort from above, and this panoramic photograph of Atlantic City, New Jersey, was taken from an airship drifting over the town. The boardwalk, the beachfront hotels and the grid of streets behind them would have been visible to the crew at a height that no camera had reached before. Airships were still a novelty in 1909, and aerial pictures like this one were among the earliest ways people could see familiar places as a whole rather than block by block. The wide format of the print adds to the sense of sweeping across the resort's shoreline.
