A sweeping panoramic view of Los Angeles, taken from a tethered or free-floating balloon, shows the city when it was still a sprawling collection of low buildings, orchards and open lots spread across the basin. Aerial photography of this kind was a novelty in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when cameras were lifted by balloons, kites and early aircraft to capture views no ground-level lens could reach. The sepia tone, typical of photographs from that era, softens the scene and makes the street grid and scattered rooftops easy to trace. Look along the horizon to see how far the city's edges ran before the freeways and dense development of later decades filled the land in.
