Few pictures from the 1889 Paris Exposition look down on the city like this one, with the newly built Eiffel Tower standing near the center of the frame. Taken from a balloon, it shows the iron lattice rising above the rooftops and streets. The Tissandier Collection is named for Gaston Tissandier, the French aeronaut who combined balloon flight with photography to record cities from above. Completed as the exposition's centerpiece, the tower was then the tallest structure in the world, and this view makes its scale easy to see.
