Suspended beneath a large tethered balloon, the observer's basket hangs in open air above the U.S. Naval Training Station at Hampton Roads, Virginia, in this view dated 1918. Kite balloons like this one were a standard tool of the First World War, anchored by cable and raised high enough for an observer to scan coastal waters and report by telephone to the ground. Hampton Roads was a busy center for naval training at the time. The print was issued by the Albertype Company of Brooklyn, a firm known for photomechanical views, and it documents the equipment used in that training.
