A military observation balloon rides above a field of ground crew and the hangars that housed the gear. Tethered balloons like this one were used to spot artillery fire and watch enemy positions, and the crews that inflated, winched and steadied them were as central to the work as the observers in the basket. Balloons of this kind were a fixture of US Army and Navy operations in the early twentieth century, and the scene shows how much organization sat behind a single aloft observer. Look at the ropes and the handling team on the ground, which reveal how a balloon was actually operated.
