Its gas envelope and basket rest on open ground, probably as handlers readied the craft before a launch, a stage of ballooning that was less often photographed than the flight itself. The title, "Lambert balloon," comes from caption data written by the Bain News Service, and the record does not confirm the date or the specific craft. The Bain agency supplied news photographs in the early 1900s, when ballooning drew large crowds to sporting, military and exhibition events in the United States. Viewers interested in the equipment should look at the rigging and the basket, which show how these early aircraft were anchored and prepared for flight.
