Balloons begin to lift off the ground in this 1908 view taken in Berlin, capturing the moment a race launch turns into flight. The Gordon Bennett Cup, the leading international balloon contest of the period, was held in the German capital that year and drew teams from several nations. Bain News Service photographers worked the press circuit and sent news pictures like this one to newspapers. The title comes from unverified caption data, but the scene shows how ballooning had become a public spectacle by the early twentieth century.
