A field dotted with balloons gives this glass negative its subject, and its title places the scene at a Berlin balloon race in 1908. That year Berlin hosted the Gordon Bennett Cup, the leading international contest for gas balloons. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers, made the negative, but the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact event and site deserve some caution. The picture still shows how ballooning drew crowds and press attention in the years before powered aircraft became common.
