Oscar Erbslon stands with the balloon "Berlin" just before takeoff, in a scene from the 1908 ballooning contests held in Germany. That year the Gordon Bennett Cup, the leading international balloon race, launched from Berlin and drew crews from several countries and large crowds to the field. Pictures like this one show the work behind the flight: the envelope being readied, the basket and ropes checked, and the crew waiting for the signal to let go. The Bain News Service, which made this glass negative, supplied news photographs to newspapers, and its caption details were recorded on the negative, so names and places should be checked against other sources.
