Balloon bursting mid-flight is a rare subject, and this glass negative records the American balloon *Conqueror* coming apart aloft over Berlin in 1908. That year the German capital hosted international ballooning contests, which drew competitors from several countries to its open launch grounds. The Bain News Service, the Washington-based picture agency that made this negative, supplied newspapers with news photographs of this kind, so the image reflects the press interest such events drew at the time.
