The record's distinguishing detail is a motor vehicle fitted with armor plating and a gun described as a "balloon gun," which points to military interest in attacking or defending against observation balloons. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan-based photo agency, made the glass negative, and its caption cards are the source of the title, which the Library of Congress labels as unverified. The date, written as "1/4/09," is also open to interpretation. Around the turn of the twentieth century, armies were testing motor vehicles for mobile roles, and this image shows that early effort to combine the automobile with weapons.
