This glass negative is catalogued as a Krupp balloon gun, a German anti-aircraft piece of the kind used against observation balloons during the First World War. Krupp, the Essen firm that supplied much of the German army's heavy artillery, built such weapons to shoot down the tethered balloons that spotted artillery fire over the front lines. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that made and captioned the image, recorded the title from its own caption cards, which have not been independently checked. No date is given, so the exact moment the photograph was taken remains unknown.
