The caption on this Bain News Service glass negative credits a Krupp gun with wrecking a balloon, but the record gives no date and the title itself is unverified. Krupp was the German firm that built many of the heavy artillery pieces of the period, and tethered observation balloons were frequent targets because they let spotters watch enemy lines. The Bain collection came from a New York news photo agency active in the early twentieth century, and wartime pictures often reached American readers with captions written far from the front, so the details are worth checking against other sources.
