The caption on this glass negative names a Krupp balloon gun, a weapon from the German arms firm founded in Essen and long among the world's leading makers of heavy artillery. Guns of this kind were built to fire at observation balloons and aircraft, and such weapons were a common subject for newspaper photographers during the First World War. The title comes from caption data that the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives, and that data has not been independently verified, so the exact model and setting remain uncertain. The Bain collection as a whole shows how wire-service photographers of the period recorded military equipment and news events for American papers.
