The start of a balloon race in St. Louis, in October 1910, is the subject of this glass negative. That month the city hosted the Gordon Bennett Cup, the leading international ballooning contest of the period, which drew pilots from several countries. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a commercial agency that sold news photographs in the early 1900s. Its title and date come from caption data the library has not independently verified.
