Rather than the balloon itself, this picture focuses on the spectators packed into the stands, with a balloon hanging overhead as the race gets underway in St. Louis. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, made the glass negative, and its caption data, which is not fully verified, dates the scene to October 1907. St. Louis was a major center of American ballooning in those years and hosted the Gordon Bennett Cup that autumn, so the image captures one of the sport's most public moments.
