Thomas Scott Baldwin, an American aeronaut known for his early airships, is the name attached to this view of a dirigible drifting low over a crowd of onlookers. The catalog date of May 26, 1909, places it in the period when powered, steerable airships drew large public audiences at exhibitions and open-air demonstrations. The glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency whose pictures of new technology and daily news were widely sold to newspapers. The title is taken from the agency's own notes and has not been independently verified, so the scene is best read as a record of how the public encountered early aviation.
