This glass negative shows a dirigible named Zodiac in flight, a steerable, gas-filled airship that was a novelty in the American press in 1907. The record dates it to August 25, 1907, though the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on the negatives or cards, which has not been independently verified. Bain was a New York news photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers, so the plate reflects the urgency of press photography of the period. Early airships like this one drew large crowds, and photographs of them served as a record of the era's fascination with powered flight before fixed-wing aircraft took over the skies.
