Thaddeus Lowe, a civilian aeronaut, offered his gas balloons to the Union Army in 1861, and by 1862 he was flying them over the Virginia Peninsula during the Union advance toward Richmond. Gaines Mill, named here, was the site of a fierce battle on June 27, 1862, during the Seven Days' fighting. From the basket, Lowe's observers could look down on Confederate positions and send reports to commanders by telegraph wire. This picture dates from about 1910, so it is a later print of a Civil War subject, issued by the Patriot Publishing Company.
