Spanning the Harlem River at the northern end of Manhattan, High Bridge was completed in 1848 to carry water from the Croton Aqueduct into the city, and it is the oldest surviving bridge in New York City. This view, made around 1890, exists as two glass negatives joined to form a wide panorama, with the sky painted in on both. The Detroit Publishing Company made many such scenes, and this one was commissioned by the New York Central Railroad, whose tracks ran along the Harlem River nearby. The stone arches and the busy riverbank show how the bridge fit into a rapidly growing city.
