The Washington Bridge, which crosses the Harlem River between upper Manhattan and the Bronx, was completed in the late 1880s to replace an older span that had long linked the two shores. This view is a two-part panorama made from a pair of glass negatives, so the river, the piers and the boats along the waterfront stretch across a wide frame. The prints came from W.H. Jackson & Co., a Detroit firm whose photographers recorded American cities and landscapes around 1890. Look along the banks for the wharves and small craft, which show how busy the Harlem River was as a working waterway at the time.
