A glass negative taken from High Bridge around 1905 looks down the Harlem River toward the Washington Bridge and the Harlem River Speedway, the drive that ran along the riverbank for carriages and early automobiles. High Bridge, finished in 1848 to carry the Croton Aqueduct across the river, is the oldest surviving bridge in New York City, so the view pairs a mid-19th-century crossing with the newer roads built beside it. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its turn-of-the-century views of American places, made the picture, and a crack running through the middle of the plate is still visible on the surviving negative.
