The record names the Harlem River as the focus, with towers and a trail or path along its banks, so this view sits where Manhattan's northern edge meets the water that separates it from the Bronx. The Detroit Publishing Company made its views around the turn of the twentieth century, when it sold large-format photographs and hand-colored prints of American cities and landscapes to travelers and armchair tourists. The image survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format that gave photographers fine detail and a way to record the riverside in the early 1900s.
