High Bridge, which carries Manhattan across the Harlem River into the Bronx, is among the oldest surviving bridges in New York City. Completed in 1848, it was built to carry water from the Croton Aqueduct into the city and for a time was the only crossing of the river. This view was made from two glass negatives joined into a single panorama, with painted skies added to both, a common practice for giving wide scenes a finished look. The Detroit Publishing Company produced the image around 1890, and the record names the New York Central Railroad as the commissioning party.
