Here the camera stands at the Manhattan end of the Brooklyn Bridge, where the bridge's approach met the city's elevated railroad lines. The bridge opened in 1883 and quickly became a main route between Manhattan and Brooklyn, and by the early 1900s the elevated trains and streetcars around its Manhattan terminus carried heavy crowds of commuters each day. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made around 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American cities and landmarks for sale as views. The scene shows how the bridge, the rail structures, and the busy street worked together as one transit hub.
