The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, was among the largest suspension bridges in the world when it opened, and this glass-plate negative captures it in the years around 1909 and 1910, long after its novelty had worn off but while it remained a daily route for thousands of commuters. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated across the country and documented cities, rail lines and scenery, made the large 8 by 10 inch plates that gave such crisp detail to the granite towers and steel cables. Its survival in the Library of Congress collection, donated by the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, offers a rare window into how the bridge looked to photographers of the early twentieth century.
