Few views of the Brooklyn Bridge were made on a camera plate as large as this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, which gives the span's steel cables and stone towers unusual sharpness. The bridge opened in 1883, linking Manhattan and Brooklyn across the East River, and it was then the longest suspension bridge in the world. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American cities and landmarks, made this image between about 1905 and 1920. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
