Taken from the tower on the Brooklyn side of the Williamsburg Bridge, this view looks out over the East River toward Manhattan, with the piers and wharves lining the shore. The bridge had opened in 1903, and the years this negative was made were a period of fast growth on both banks, when the waterfront handled much of the city's freight and ferry traffic. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the large glass-plate negative, documented American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century, so the picture records the harbor's working edge as it looked then.
