A vessel named Dakota sits at the lower left edge of this view, a small detail that anchors the frame on the East River. The picture shows the Williamsburg Bridge, which opened in December 1903 to carry traffic between the Lower East Side of Manhattan and Brooklyn. For a few years it held the title of longest suspension bridge in the world, a distinction that drew engineers and sightseers to the waterfront. The image is an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century.
