Worshippers gather on the Williamsburg Bridge in this 1909 view, a spot that was unusual for prayer. The bridge, which opened in 1903, linked the crowded Lower East Side of Manhattan with Williamsburg in Brooklyn, two neighborhoods with large Jewish immigrant communities at the time. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs taken in New York in the early 1900s. The negative is damaged, so the scene is softer and less detailed than the subject deserves.
