Chinese New Year is the event this print records, set in New York's Chinatown in the years just before 1913. George Grantham Bain, a news photographer whose agency supplied pictures to newspapers, made many of the city's street scenes in this period, and his collection at the Library of Congress preserves a view of a community that was then concentrated in a few blocks of lower Manhattan. Holiday celebrations there drew both residents and curious outsiders, and the catalog tags attached to the image point to religion, holidays, and the place of Chinese Americans in the United States. The date is given only as a range, so the exact occasion is not certain.
