A shop window on a Chinatown street is the subject here: the storefront of Quong Yee Wo & Co., photographed around 1903. The picture shows how a merchant arranged goods to draw passersby in off the sidewalk, a common practice among the import and curio shops that served the neighborhood's residents and the visitors who came to tour its streets. George Daniels, a New York City photographer, registered the image for copyright, which suggests it was meant for sale as a commercial view. Its record of signage and displayed goods makes it useful for studying the district's commerce at the turn of the century.
