Where the Brooklyn Bridge came down into Manhattan, the approach was crowded with elevated train lines, and this c1905 view shows that busy junction. The bridge had opened in 1883, linking the two cities and funneling pedestrians, wagons, and trains onto the island. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its large catalog of American scenes, issued this image as a glass transparency, a format meant to be viewed with light shining through it. Look closely at the elevated structure and the street life below to see how tightly transit and foot traffic were packed together at the turn of the century.
