Shot on an 8 x 10 inch glass plate, this view looks up the East River toward the spans of the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, with the bridge structures themselves carrying the composition. The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, was among the most celebrated engineering works of its age, and by the late 1900s the East River crossings were crowded with trolleys, wagons and foot traffic. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this negative, was a commercial firm that issued photographs of American cities and landscapes, so the picture reflects the period's appetite for images of modern urban progress.
