The Manhattan Hotel in New York City is captured here on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format that gave photographers the sharp detail needed for large-scale views of city streets. The Detroit Publishing Company made the image sometime between 1900 and 1910, a period when New York's hotels and avenues were expanding rapidly with the growth of Midtown. The company, based in Detroit, sold views of towns, landmarks and streetscapes across the country, and its negatives like this one document how commercial life and street traffic looked at the turn of the twentieth century. The negative later reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
