A star-shaped flower bed laid out on the grounds sets this view of the Manhattan Beach Hotel apart, though the resort sits on the Brooklyn shore despite its title. Austin Corbin developed the hotel in the 1870s to draw well-to-do summer guests, who arrived by rail and steamer to escape the city heat. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American places around 1900, recorded it on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative.
