The Knickerbocker Hotel stood at Broadway and 42nd Street, near what is now Times Square, when this glass negative was made. The record suggests it was taken during the Hudson-Fulton Celebration of 1909, which marked the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage up the river that bears his name and the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton's first successful steamboat run. The city hung flags and bunting on many buildings that year, and the festive decorations noted in the record fit that occasion. The negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century.
