Two glass negatives, joined side by side, capture the Hotel Astor on Broadway in Manhattan as one wide view, a format the Detroit Publishing Company used to show large buildings in full. The Astor opened in 1904 near the newly renamed Times Square and was among the grand hotels that gave the district its reputation for luxury and nightlife in the early 1900s. The Detroit company sold its views to publishers and travelers, and its plates from this period record how the city's streets and hotels looked before many of them were rebuilt.
