Built by William Waldorf Astor and opened in 1904 at Broadway and West 44th Street, the Hotel Astor was one of the best-known addresses near Times Square when this view was made, sometime between 1910 and 1930. It hosted society balls, banquets, and the rooftop garden that drew crowds through the 1920s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American cities and landmarks, issued the original print, and this 5 x 7 inch glass negative is a copy made from that print.
