Few hotels of the period were as closely tied to the Manhattan rail corridor as the Vanderbilt, which stood on Park Avenue at East 34th Street, near Grand Central Terminal. This view comes from a large 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold views of American cities and scenic places as photochromes and postcards in the early twentieth century. Its exact date is uncertain, but the record places it somewhere between 1910 and 1920, a period when the avenue was filling with new office buildings and luxury hotels. The large plate would have captured fine street detail, which makes it useful for studying how the block looked before later redevelopment.
