Few hotels of the period stood as prominently as the Knickerbocker, which rose at Broadway and 42nd Street near what was becoming the heart of Times Square. Financier John Jacob Astor IV built it, and it opened in 1906 with a reputation for luxury that drew theatergoers and wealthy travelers. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and landmarks in the decade or so before 1910. Its bar, the King Cole Room, later became known for Maxfield Parrish's mural of Old King Cole, a detail worth remembering when you consider the building's social life.
