Few things in the record set this view apart from others of the era, but the 8 x 10 inch glass negative itself is worth noting: large-format plates like this one captured fine architectural detail and street-level context. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the negative, was one of the most prolific commercial photographers of American cities and landmarks in the early 1900s, selling views to postcard makers, publishers and travel promoters. Hotels such as the Belmont were landmarks of New York's growing commercial core, where visitors arrived by rail and traveled by carriage and streetcar. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
