Madison Square's Worth obelisk stands at the center of this view, with the Albemarle Hotel and the Hoffman House rising around the park. The obelisk honors General William Jenkins Worth, a veteran of the Mexican-American War, and was completed in 1857 as one of the district's earliest monuments. By the early 1900s the square had become a busy crossroads of hotels, restaurants, and theaters, and the Hoffman House was among the city's best-known gathering spots. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and landscapes in this period, made the negative.
