Bowling Green, the small triangular park at the foot of Broadway, frames this view of the United States Custom House. Cass Gilbert's granite building was finished around 1907, and its Beaux-Arts facade was meant to project federal authority at the city's commercial core. The Detroit Publishing Company recorded this scene on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative between 1907 and 1910, and the park itself dates to the colonial era and is often cited as the oldest public park in New York City.
