The memorial stands near the Fifth Avenue edge of Central Park at about 70th Street, a monument to Richard Morris Hunt, the architect who did more than anyone to bring French Beaux-Arts training and design to American building. Hunt died in 1895, and the memorial was raised in his honor. This dry plate negative, made between 1900 and 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, records the monument within a few years of its installation, when the Fifth Avenue mansions and museums it helped inspire were rising around it. Hunt's own work, including Biltmore House in Asheville and the Metropolitan Museum's facade, shows the Gilded Age taste the memorial commemorates.
