Fraunces Tavern, at the corner of Pearl and Broad streets in lower Manhattan, is the subject of this glass negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company between 1900 and 1915. The building's history reaches back to the colonial period, and it is best known as the place where George Washington bade farewell to his officers in December 1783, after British forces left New York. The company's photographers documented American towns and landmarks for sale as postcards and publications, and this view shows the old inn as the city was reshaping the streets around it.
