The battleship Nebraska, shown here in New York waters, belonged to the Virginia class that formed the core of the U.S. Navy's battle line after it was commissioned in 1907. The ship later sailed with the Great White Fleet on its cruise from 1907 to 1909. The Detroit Publishing Company produced large glass negatives like this one to supply views of American cities, landmarks and ships for travel books and promotional use. The picture captures a time when the battleship stood as a symbol of American naval strength.
