The subject here is a painting rather than a street or building: a reproduction of Childe Hassam's *The New York Window*, copied onto a glass dry plate negative. Hassam, one of the leading American Impressionists, spent much of his career painting the city from upper floors, looking down on busy avenues, rooftops, and weather-softened light. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this copy, produced photographic reproductions of paintings and views for sale to a broad public in the early 1900s, so the plate offers a glimpse of how Hassam's work reached viewers who could not see the originals. The glass negative format also shows the photographic methods of the period.
